DEBATE IN JERUSALEM ACTS 15:1-35 At the end of Acts 14, Paul and Barnabas returned from the 1st missionary journey. Enthusiastically, they told told how Lord opened door of faith to the Gentiles (Acts 14:27). Unfortunately, not everyone was happy. It created a backlash among some Christians with Jewish heritage It is possible to confuse one’s heritage with one’s obligation. They attempted to force a rite connected with Jewish heritage as an obligation. I. THE DISPUTE 15:1-3. Their aim was to convert Gentiles to the Jewish religion and be amenable to all the OT Law. The issue was not whether Gentiles should be included in the church, but the specific requirements for their inclusion. II. THE DEFENSE 15:4-21. Apostle Peter’s arguments were powerful. In 15:11 note the unusual way he emphasized both Jews and Gentiles saved by grace. We are saved by grace in the same way as they are saved. God has decreed Gentiles are NOT saved by law keeping and we (Jews) must learn that as well. James, half-brother of Jesus, showed by Scriptures God intended inclusion of Gentiles to be His plans. III. THE DECISION 15:22-35. When James finished, a wonderful thing happened as the whole church agreed (v. 22). When we equate our traditions with Scripture and attempt to bind them on others, Jesus condemns us (Mt. 15:9).
